Plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums, bamboo, the so-called ‘Four Gentlemen in Chinese painting’ are symbols of resilience, elegance, optimism, and integrity. These are the basics of Chinese brush painting. Patrick will demonstrate in English how to paint using simple and vivid brush strokes.

The Four Gentlemen have been used in Chinese painting since the time of the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279) for their refined beauty and were later adopted elsewhere in East Asia such as Korea and Japan. The brush strokes may seem impromptu but they focus on the quality of the line, striving to freely express the painter’s feelings and to capture the inner spirit of their subject instead of describing its outward appearance. Good brush paintings invoke the emotions of the audience. This is a different kind of experience from meticulous botanical drawings.

Some basic materials will be provided for painting practice during the course. There will also be an appreciation of masterpieces in Chinese painting.

Suitable for all levels.
