A unique class; two award-winning landscape artists, each with complementary and overlapping approaches to landscape painting. Students will have one and a half days with each artist. Tim and Rowen will offer demonstrations, talks and critiques - both individually and collectively. Students are welcome to bring in ongoing projects and earlier work.

Oils, acrylics and mixed media will be covered over the three days.

An exciting, fun and rewarding class with great camaraderie.

This class is suited to students with some previous experience.

Materials List:

This list covers a range of materials for use with Tim and Rowen over the three days of the workshop. Students can work in either oil or acrylic paints (or both, using acrylics as underpainting). Don’t worry about purchasing everything on this list – it is a guide and materials will be discussed in more detail on the first day.

Source material – may include;

  • Photographs of an experienced landscape, a place you’ve really enjoyed. Multiple photos with different angles, including detail shots, will give you the most options.
  • Plein air sketches, charcoal or pencil in sketchbook
  • Researched artists
  • Earlier finished work

Oil painting - Colour List

The following is a generic list of basic colours, names can vary between brands. In general, especially when using large amounts, look for Series 1 colours - synthetic versions of expensive pigments - in artist quality paints.

Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Cadmium Red Hue, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue Hue or Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Titanium White (lots)

Extras; Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Olive Green, Cerulean Blue, Turquoise Blue, Paynes Grey, Violet, Prussian Blue, Naples Yellow, Rose Madder

Oil Painting Mediums

  • The basic oil painting medium is Odourless Solvent (Brands; either Archival or Art Spectrum). No turps based mediums are allowed in the painting studio.
  •  Refined Linseed Oil
  • Lean, Classic and Fat mediums. These are generally a varied combination of odourless solvent, linseed oil and alkyd resin. The lean mediums are thinner and quick-drying; the fat mediums are thicker and slow drying. Some brands are still using gum turps rather than odourless solvent in their mediums, check on the bottle. Hand mixing varied amounts of odourless solvent and refined linseed oil can achieve the same effect (although these will be slower drying without the alkyd resin)
  •  Smooth Gel Medium, Flow Gel Medium, Liquin. These are alkyd-based mediums that speed up the drying time while keeping the structure of thicker oil paint.

Acrylic painting - Colour list

As for oil paints with some minor variations, for example Yellow Ochre becomes Yellow Oxide and Lemon Yellow becomes Yellow Light

Acrylic painting mediums

  • Names can vary between brands, making choices confusing. However there are a few broad types of mediums that can be very useful when painting in acrylics;
  • Acrylic painting medium (the basic binder medium used in acrylics, also called ‘clear painting medium’)
  • Slow drying medium (eg ‘open medium’ or ‘unlocking formula’)
  • Varnish medium (water-based)
  • Gel medium
  • Impasto medium (only if painting thickly)

Canvas

Multiple canvas boards or canvases. Include some small, cheap boards (or oil sketch paper) for experiments and studies as well as a couple of larger canvases for finished work.

Other Materials

  • Palette - at least A3 size. Perspex, plastic or primed wood. More than one palette can be useful
  • Brushes - a range of bristle brushes; flat, round and filbert. A range between sizes #1 to #12 as well as a few larger ones. Cheap brushes can last forever if cleaned well every session
  • Palette knives
  • Containers (metal or glass) and cotton rags
  • Water sprayer (for acrylic painters)
  • Sketchbook (visual diary), pencils, charcoal and erasers
  • A2 or A1 cartridge paper for larger working sketches
  • Large sheets of sturdy paper
