Open to adults and high school students above 15 years old.

This workshop is perfect for those who want to learn the basics of drawing. It is also suitable for students who wish to develop their current drawing skills. During the workshop we work on two drawing exercises: a still life and a tonal study of a well-known artwork.

In the first exercise a still life is set up in the studio. The purpose of this activity is to train observational drawing skills and fundamentals such as perspective, proportion and basic graphite drawing techniques. Additionally, we will also address how drawing is “visual thinking” and how artists use sketching to develop their ideas.

The second exercise involves a charcoal study of an artwork from a photograph (previous examples have included Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring). this activity explores how tone (light & dark) is used to suggest form and how artist use tonal contrasts to create drama in their work. We will use charcoal in this activity, a material which is perfect for creating emotive, gestural and tonal work.

Jackson will explain everything in detail and give demonstrations to help you complete the drawings. This is very much a relaxed, unpressured environment. Students are not expected to finish completed “artworks” rather, Jackson’s motivation is for you to leave with a greater understanding of drawing and more confidence in your creativity.
