Suitable for all levels

In this workshop, award winning portrait artist Mathew Lynn will guide you through achieving a likeness of someone important to you.

A portrait is a very personal and specific art work, because we are trying to create a sense of someone’s being (as well as recognising our own). Mathew will introduce you to the essential technical elements - firstly through drawing, and then painting, and the differences between the two. He will then discuss and encourage you to really look at your subject's personality, and how to convey this with your technical elements, always serving their likeness.

Following Mathew’s technical guidance in understanding lines and planes, and the ‘jigsaw puzzle’ of shapes that is required to make a likeness, students will work through drawing studies and can experiment with different drawing materials. Later, Mathew will encourage you to use this work to translate into painting. He believes it’s important to explore these two processes, and what is distinctive about them, however you may choose to draw for the entire workshop if you prefer.

There will be some initial group instruction, and then mostly one-on-one guidance as each student moves into their own project. Mathew likes to work with people of all skill levels, and will make you feel comfortable while providing specific challenges unique to you.

Materials List

  • Reference material: Bring a range of images of a person (or people) you’d like to work from. Mathew can help you in choosing images. Having prints of images can be helpful so you can keep both hands free. Tablet or phone is also fine.
  • The setup of your preferred medium (oil painters must use an odourless system).
  • A sketchbook and drawing materials for quick studies and experiments.
