The class will focus on the development of each student in order to facilitate their own individual creativity, and development of a personal visual language. Students will have the opportunity to develop a robust toolkit of painting skills exploring conceptual and perceptual processes. Examples of significant works throughout art history will be presented to inspire and develop familiarity with a range of materials, techniques, and strategies to engage with painting as a means of creative expression.

Materials list

Something to paint on:

  • Oil painting paper (available in a pad) for studies and tests.  
  • canvas, canvas board, or wood panel for your major work. 

NOTE: You can work in either Acrylic or Oil, you do not need both for this workshop. This class offers the scope for individuals to include additional media such as watercolour or mixed media.

Media for Acrylics:

  • Paint - Bring what you have. You will need at least: 
    • Warm and cool blue (French ultramarine, Cerulean blue or Phthalo blue,)
    • Warm and cool yellow (Spectrum/Winsdor yellow, Lemon yellow), 
    • Warm and cool red (Magenta, Spectrum/Winsdor red, Vermillion)
    • Titanium white
    • Raw umber
  •  Palette (Plastic or disposable) 
  • Water Container
  • Acrylic Matt/Gloss Medium or Gel Medium
  • Flow Improver or Drying Retarder (not essential)
  • Brushes (a range of sizes, make sure to include some ‘flat’ style brushes) 
  • Palette knife
  • Red/brown pencil
  • Art diary and pencil
  • Paper Towel/Rags 

Media for Oils:

  • Paint - Bring what you have. You will need at least: 
    • Warm and cool blue (French ultramarine, Cerulean blue or Phthalo blue)
    • Warm and cool yellow (Spectrum/Winsdor yellow, Lemon yellow), 
    • Warm and cool red (Magenta, Spectrum/Winsdor red, Vermillion)
    • Titanium white
    • Raw umber
  • Palette (disposable paper palette pads work well for transport)
  • Glass container with lid for solvent
  • Odourless solvent
  • Classic medium or Windsor & Newton Liquin
  • Brushes (a range of sizes, make sure to include some ‘flat’ type brushes) 
  • Palette knife
  • Red/brown pencil
  • Art diary and pencil
  • Paper Towel/Rags 
  • Nitrile disposable gloves if you have a sensitivity to solvents. 

Inspiration:

  • Images, books, magazines or journals that inspire you
  • Images of previous works that you have completed
