Introduction to Japanese Mokuhanga [Multi Block] Coloured Woodcuts with Roslyn Kean / 3 Day Workshop

Learn Japanese Mokuhanga printing in the traditional technique!
This workshop will cover the ancient registration methods of traditional Japanese woodcuts allowing numerous blocks of varying colours to be incorporated into a single image.
Explore various image transfer methods onto the blocks and carving styles from loose expressive to fine line detail.
Printing will be done by hand using various barens.
Maximum paper size will be A4 to allow for more complex blocks to be carved and printed within the time frame.
There is also opportunity for black and white images.
The three days will include tool sharpening, carving techniques, paper choices for relief printing, and inking techniques.
Inks provided wash up with detergent and water so there is minimal toxicity of materials used.
Roslyn will have tools available for carving, sharpening stones, inks and rollers (brayers), barens, disposable gloves etc.
Materials
- A materials kit will be provided - this includes various blocks, fine art papers, proofing paper, drafting film and carbon paper (the materials fee of $30 is included in the price).
- Bring prepared image ideas to the workshop. Maximum image size 16cm x 24cm on A4 paper. Portrait or landscape orientation option.
