Painting Studio with Jackson Davies

Suitable for beginners - intermediate.

Develop your painting skills in a relaxed and supportive studio environment. Although suitable for those with some visual art experience, all are welcome to join. This course explores colour mixing, tone, composition, and painting techniques through examples, practical exercises, and individual guidance. Jackson gives a talk at the beginning of each lesson followed by a demonstration. Students may work in either oil or acrylic while developing confidence and their own personal style.

You are also welcome to bring in your own work to seek guidance from Jackson.

Week 1 – Materials & Foundations 

• Introduction to oil and acrylic materials
• Brushes, mediums and surfaces
• Colour mixing basics
• Simple tonal painting exercise

Week 2 – Tone & Form 

• Seeing values before colour
• Creating the illusion of light
• Monochrome still life study

Week 3 – Colour Mixing 

• Warm and cool colour relationships
• Limited palettes
• Mixing natural and vibrant colours

Week 4 – Composition Balance, focal points and movement 

• Cropping and design Planning a successful painting

Week 5 – Painting from Observation 

• Measuring and proportion
• Edges and brushwork
• Still life or reference study

Week 6 – Light & Atmosphere 

• Understanding different lighting conditions
• Creating depth and space
• Colour temperature

Week 7 – Surface & Technique 

• Layering techniques for oil and acrylic
• Texture, glazing and scumbling (where appropriate)
• Refining brushwork

Week 8 – Personal Project 

• Individual painting with instructor guidance
• Developing composition and colour
• Problem-solving and refinement

Week 9 – Personal project or model 

• Individual painting Life model session (optional)
