Suitable for beginners

Solar plate etching is a fun, quick, simple & safe printmaking technique - the alternative to working with traditional acids found in traditional methods. The plate is made from a steel backed photosensitive polymer which is water soluble. Your images will be reproduced using a UV light and washed in water ready for printing on the etching press. There will be emphasis on colour during the printing process, with various ways to apply ink using viscosity process to create a portfolio of stunning colourful prints.

Solar plates provided. Please see the materials lists below for what is included and what you will need to bring.

There will be a short lunch break each day - please bring something with you.

Tea and coffee provided by tutor.

Day 1

Drawing will be the focus of this workshop using pencils, pens and gouache paints onto drafting paper. These will be exposed onto the solar plate in the sun and washed in water to reveal the image by means of a photo emulation film in the plate.

Day 2

Many printing methods will be introduces such as Ala poupée as well as stencils. Viscosity colour printing will be demonstrated using Inks of various colours, repelling each other to create colourful prints.
