Suitable for all levels
In this one-day workshop, students will learn how to construct individual facial features - including the eye, nose, mouth and ear—using graphite and charcoal.
Michael will demonstrate how seemingly complex areas of the face can be simplified into basic geometric shapes, making them easier to understand and draw. Students will learn how to establish underlying structure before developing tone, volume and form.
Through demonstrations and individual feedback, students will work from provided photographic references and mirrors to develop their observational and drawing skills.
Suitable for all skill levels, this workshop is an accessible introduction for those who may feel daunted by drawing a complete portrait, while giving more experienced students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of individual facial features.
Topics covered:
- Overview of materials
- Creating a variety of effects with charcoal
- Basic anatomy of the eye, nose, mouth and ear
- Simplifying features into planes and tonal shapes
- Understanding tonal values
- Creating volume and form
Materials:
- Butcher's paper
- Cartridge paper (minimum A3)
- General's compressed charcoal pencils: 2B and 6B
- Willow charcoal (thick and thin)
- Spray fixative
- Tissues
- Kneadable eraser
- Flat brushes for blending (approximately sizes 6 and 12)
- HB graphite pencil
