In this workshop, students will explore the portrait techniques of the Old Masters. We will examine how artists used colour, brushwork, and contrast to create compelling portraits.
Particular focus will be given to mixing flesh tones and capturing the features of the face. Jackson will discuss several artworks to highlight the technical and material aspects of historical portrait painting, followed by demonstrations and guided exercises. Participants will work through studies in colour, facial structure, and a small copy of a master portrait.
This workshop is suitable for those with some experience in oil painting.

Support:
Stretched canvas/board/canvas paper
- Any size is fine to start with, we will discuss further in class.
Mediums:
- Linseed oil Artist quality
- Odourless Artist’s Turpentine
Recommended Colours:
- Titanium White
- Zinc White
- Raw Umber
- Burnt Sienna
- Ivory Black
- Yellow ochre
- Ultramarine
- Cadmium Red
- Cadmium Yellow
- Alizarin Red
*Cadmium can be substituted for spectrum or equivalent.
Recommended Brushes:
- Round shape, hog bristle, a range of sizes.
- At least one small fine-tipped brush, sizes 0 or 00.
- Any that you already own
